OpenVPN: open-source VPN daemon and business remote access platform

OpenVPN is an open-source VPN daemon developed by OpenVPN Inc. and distributed under the GPL-2.0 license. Alongside the free Community Edition, the company offers two commercial products: Access Server, a self-hosted solution, and CloudConnexa, a cloud-delivered service. The daemon's source code is hosted on GitHub, where the project has about 14,700 stars and more than 4,800 commits.

Community Edition downloads

• Windows installers are available for x86-64, ARM64 and x86 (32-bit). They include the OpenVPN GUI client and a system service daemon, and support Windows 10 and later, including Windows Server editions.
• The download page also provides a source archive, release notes and GnuPG signatures for verifying downloads. The current Windows release is version 2.7.8.

Client applications

• OpenVPN for Android is an open-source client, and Tunnelblick is an open-source client for macOS.

• OpenVPN Connect supports AES-256 encryption, TLS 1.3, Android Always-on VPN, a kill switch, split tunneling, auto-reconnect, captive Wi-Fi portal detection and an HTTP proxy configuration.
• Authentication options include certificates, username and password, external certificates, MFA and web-based SAML SSO. The app can import .ovpn profiles, and it offers a global configuration file for MDM deployments.

Commercial server options

• Access Server is a self-hosted product with web-based administration, clustering for horizontal scaling and customizable access policies. It can be deployed on IaaS providers, Docker, Linux, Hyper-V and VMware ESXi. Access policies can be enforced using identity, device and IP verification.
• CloudConnexa is a cloud-delivered zero-trust service with points of presence in more than 30 locations. It provides domain-based traffic routing, IPsec support for connecting networks, content filtering and IDS/IPS.
